In 1978 James Snidle came to Chico to pursue a Masters degree in Art. In 1980, Snidle successfully completed this goal, earning a M.A. degree from California State University at Chico with an emphasis in both ceramics and drawing. Over the past 20 years Snidle has received recognition for his work in various mediums. James Snidle’s work has been shown and is in numerous collections throughout the United States. Since 1989, Snidle has been the owner of James Snidle Fine Arts and Appraisals. Exhibiting both local and national artists, James Snidle Fine Arts and Appraisals also offers services in consulting, appraising fine arts and collectables, and brokering early California and European period paintings. Though Snidle maintains a gallery and office in San Francisco, he continues to offer services in Chico for one week out of each month. In 2007 Snidle successfully completed the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice course and passed the required examination.  The gallery also offers a range of art restoration and framing services (see Guy Downing Art Restoration).

James is also a plein air painter himself (featured in the galleries on this website).
